Victoria Baby Photographer-Sweet Baby Boy in Blue

As many of you know, as a newborn photographer here in Victoria, BC, we try to have babies into the studio within the first 5-14days after they arrive. This sweet baby boy came to visit us when he was 2 months old as his parents weren’t able to do his session sooner. Honestly, we had such a fun time! He was awake the whole time but oh so relaxed! I loved all of his adorable expressions and smiles, what a gorgeous stage to capture!!

Here are a few of his little set-ups in studio. I really can’t choose whether I liked the light blue or dark blue the most, they have a different look and feel but he really suited both!

If you have missed the first couple of weeks for your newborn session, then consider having baby in when he or she is 2-4 months. This age is so engaging and an opportunity to capture your little one’s personality before they are on the move!!

3 TIPS FOR CHOOSING BABY HAIR ACCESSORIES

So many moms ask me where they can find the sweet little headbands and bows that I use for the sessions, so I thought I’d share a few favourites! The majority of accessories I buy are handmade, often local makers and offer the most unique styles that I can find! I used a variety of soft and dainty headbands for this baby girl’s session and just love how they add a sweet touch!

A few things to consider when choosing your own:

1. Comfort-there is nothing worse than putting a headband on baby that leaves a mark! Look for soft and stretchy materials that will sit comfortably on the hairline and grow along with baby. These bows from Isn’t She Lovely are some of my favourites and come in a variety of sweet colours and patterns. View Isnt She Lovely XOX headbands on Etsy.com – Affiliate

2. Size-there is a huge range of “newborn” sizing when you look around at accessories for babes. Most are far too big and overpower baby’s tiny features. Look for a bow or flower accessory that is around 1″ in diameter, that way baby will still be the star of the show. I love Modern Baby’s headband selection for baby as she grows. 3. Color-one of the most difficult obstacles I run into while trying to source accessories for babies in big box stores is that the colour palettes were often too bright and garish. There were far more options with buying handmade, as makers use natural fibers and soft muted tones. Love the colours on these ones from Etsy – Affiliate

How special would it be to receive a photoshoot for a baby shower gift?? Um…I would have loved that!! When a friend of this new family contacted me with an idea to gift their friend’s a photo session we got to work planning a date that they could come in. Baby had just arrived and she wanted to take all the guesswork out of the session by booking everything and having them just show up!

THOSE BIG BLUE EYES!

This newborn session was one of my very favourites! When mom inquired about photos they had freshly arrived to Victoria and were eager to head out on an outdoor shoot for their maternity photos making sure to include a Westcoast backdrop to send home to family and friends.

A few weeks later this little man arrived, wide awake for the beginning of his session! He honestly gave us some of the wisest looks I have ever seen from a newborn, those beautiful eyes peering up all nestled in the blankets and wraps we had prepared. He fell into a peaceful sleep for the remainder. I love that mom and dad chose blues and neutrals for their session. Not only did these colours flow together so well but they will be timeless & will look incredible in their album which I’ll share on the blog soon!

CO-ORDINATING MATERNITY & BABY PHOTOS

Connecting with mamas at the stage when their family is just starting or continuing to expand is wonderful for many reasons!! I get to meet them at such an exciting time as they are embarking on a new journey. Expectant moms come to see me when they are between 34-36 weeks. The wardrobe at the studio has been curated to allow us to co-ordinate maternity sessions, so they flow well when moms come in a few weeks later with their gorgeous baby for their newborn session. Keeping items neutral with soft colours really helps to unify a gallery and then allow parents the flexibility to display all their photos together in their homes or create a beautiful album where all the images work together to showcase the most important part of their images….them!!! Here are a few images from Chrissy’s stunning maternity session as well as her beautiful baby boy Ashton.

MATERNITY SESSION – A Westcoast Backdrop

I sometimes wondered how the changeover would go from sunset sessions in the heat of the desert to the rugged Westcoast with a reputation for rain more days of the year than not. I was pleasantly surprised when the month of August gave us more sunny days than rain. For this maternity photo session I met Meghan & Sean at the Esquimalt Lagoon. We had a lovely evening together chatting and walking along the lagoon, casually taking pictures along the way. It was a perfect pace to observe where the sun sets at this time of the year and to talk about the exciting time ahead for them both.

Recently I was reading Daniela Ingals blog post about finding the “perfect” backdrop. She is a lovely newborn and family photographer in Munich, Germany. What we both realized is that there really isn’t a “perfect” backdrop for pictures. It is so much more about the journey of the couples or family we are photographing and about their story in whatever beautiful location we’re able to find along the way. Trees and general greenery provide a perfect filter for the sun here so I’m excited to explore as I go and meet all sorts of wonderful people along the way!
