3 TIPS FOR CHOOSING BABY HAIR ACCESSORIES

So many moms ask me where they can find the sweet little headbands and bows that I use for the sessions, so I thought I’d share a few favourites! The majority of accessories I buy are handmade, often local makers and offer the most unique styles that I can find! I used a variety of soft and dainty headbands for this baby girl’s session and just love how they add a sweet touch!

A few things to consider when choosing your own:

1. Comfort-there is nothing worse than putting a headband on baby that leaves a mark! Look for soft and stretchy materials that will sit comfortably on the hairline and grow along with baby. These bows from Isn’t She Lovely are some of my favourites and come in a variety of sweet colours and patterns. View Isnt She Lovely XOX headbands on Etsy.com – Affiliate

2. Size-there is a huge range of “newborn” sizing when you look around at accessories for babes. Most are far too big and overpower baby’s tiny features. Look for a bow or flower accessory that is around 1″ in diameter, that way baby will still be the star of the show. I love Modern Baby’s headband selection for baby as she grows. 3. Color-one of the most difficult obstacles I run into while trying to source accessories for babies in big box stores is that the colour palettes were often too bright and garish. There were far more options with buying handmade, as makers use natural fibers and soft muted tones. Love the colours on these ones from Etsy – Affiliate

Victoria Newborn Photography – A Rainbow of Hope

As a newborn photographer I have the privilege of capturing precious memories with parents holding their brand new babies. Happy, joyful memories. However, whether a part of our own journey to motherhood or a dear friend we know, there are many who have been affected by the loss of a baby in their lives. For this couple their journey to parenthood was a bumpy one. There have been times of sorrow and of pain. They were so kind to share their story with me and allow me to share it with you. This little darling arrived to show her mom and dad joy. Introducing gorgeous little Ruby <3

I get asked so many times how we’re able to get images with baby sleeping the whole session!! Truth is, some sessions little ones sleep for a very short amount of time;). We try our best to have parents follow a few helpful hints prior to the session to increase the chances of baby being as sleepy as possible when they arrive to the studio. Bathing baby, having sibling time, tickling toes are just a few but of course keeping a newborn awake can sometimes be a challenge! We also make sure that Mom avoids gassy foods & caffeine if she is breastfeeding (I get it, this is plain mean for a sleep-deprived mama!!). Sometimes she follows all these notes and her little one just wants to party at the studio;). Either way, we make sure that everything is ready to go before our clients arrive. If babe arrives asleep, we can start the session right away which will increase the number of set-ups we’re able to complete. This little guy only had brief sleepy times but we were still able to get a full gallery. Mom chose a white-on-white set up, so perfect to contrast with his beautiful head of hair. And of course a cheeky awake one just for fun!

Beautiful baby Isaac

This gorgeous baby boy!! He was honestly so very good for us and proud big sis made an appearance too. I love how these dreamy colors that mom chose just flow together, neutral with a little splash of baby blue. Scroll a little further down to play his birth announcement, one of the options you can add on to your newborn session. Beautiful baby Isaac ♥

Call us crazy, but a few weeks ago we made the move all the way across the world from Abu Dhabi to Victoria, BC, Canada!! I have to admit there’s a little culture shock going on for us all, it will take some getting used to but baby steps…. One of our major concerns was for me to find a studio space in Victoria. The search began a few weeks back with little success and then as fate, luck, kismet (you decide;) would have it I was introduced online through a mutual friend to another photographer here in Victoria! Long story short but she has invited me to share a really fabulous studio space on Yates & Government (you know the corner, it’s right above the Starbucks). Exciting, right?!! A little sooner than anticipated so things will get set up over the course of the summer but I have started booking  clients in from mid-August onwards. If you are interested in booking a maternity, newborn or family photography session with Amanda Haddow Photography please contact for details at 250-885-6860 or email at amandahaddow@gmail.com. Can’t wait to meet you, let this new adventure begin!

Newborn baby photography session – Avery

After a long and wonderful holiday season traveling and photographing my very own family in Namibia, Africa (was fun to take just a little break from baby photos;), I am catching up on some newborn blogging!! A lovely way to start back to the world of blog posts is with this sweet baby girl. She was so good for us and we were able to use a few different props and my new grey blanket! Simply adorable! Pinks, grey and creams are such a pretty combination for a baby girl’s newborn photography session, don’t you think? What are your favourite colour combinations for girls??

Thinking about booking your newborn baby photography session in Victoria BC? It’s never too early! Newborn baby picture sessions take place within 5-12 days after baby’s birth and my calendar fills up quickly. It is suggested that you book your newborn photographer at the beginning of your second trimester to guarantee room on their calendar around your baby’s estimated due date.  I can’t wait to take your precious baby’s photos!
